So you have a contractor, and you have asked all of the right questions. Now, you’re ready to take the first steps in the installation of your new hardwood flooring. But hold up! What about all the stuff currently lying on your floors?
The Work Before the Work
There is still some work to be done beforehand. You have to clear out the work area, establish expectations with your contractor, and agree on any extra fees. You must prepare before installation can commence minimizing the chances of error and miscommunication. Below are three ways to prepare yourself and your floors before the installation begins.
A Clear Work Area
Just like a painting, the canvas must be bare before the artist can work. Similarly, the hardwood floors must be stripped and free from clutter. So, you will need to remove any items sitting around. This includes:
- Carpeting
- Furniture
- Appliances
- Pets
- Other valuable objects
Your installation crew would require the area to be empty before they arrive so they can start immediately.
Communication is Key
You must have a detailed discussion with your contractor prior to installation day. They can explain what needs to be moved and when so it aligns with the schedule.
Also, you can check with your contractor if they would be willing to remove the items for you. If you pursue this route, just make sure to tell your contractor exactly what needs to be moved. It is better to get these details sorted out before installation to avoid any hiccups and bumps down the road.
It is important to note your contractor may charge you extra for this preparation work. So, make sure you’ve agreed upon a price before they start removing your items from the work area.
Keeping the Mess at a Minimum
Because the installation of a hardwood floor is a construction process, things can get messy and dusty. If this bothers you, talk to your contractor about ways to limit the inevitable mess. Again, any extra work may cost you extra. So it is best to be upfront with your contractor about your expectations.
